~ Alex Merritt while raping Elizabeth Olivet. |
Dr. Alexander J. "Alex" Merritt is the main antagonist of the Law & Order episode "Helpless." He is a sadistic gynecologist who sexually abused his wife but turned to his patients later on, including forensic psychiatrist Elizabeth Olivet.
He was portrayed by Paul Hecht, who also voiced Emperor Palpatine in the radio dramatizations of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He raped and beat his first wife for 6 years.
- When he married another woman, he abused her in the same way as his first wife, but this time, he is implied to have forced her into S&M. In the end, his second wife committed suicide to escape him.
- Using his position as a gynecologist, he has sexually abused dozens of female patients, these crimes would be things such as repeated molestations, rapes, drugging's, and sexually battery. In total, 54, not counting the ones in the episode who are abused, one of them being Delores Gaines who was sexually battered while off anesthesia.
- He raped Diane Perkins, giving her PTSD and causing her to go to forensic psychiatrist Elizabeth Olivet.
- When Olivet finds out about his crimes, she goes to Alex's office for an investigation and gets molested. When she brings a tape to record their conversation later on, he has Miriam Greg, a doctor who he gave Percodan in exchange for drugs, drug Olivet, which allows him to brutally rape her. While she is being victimized, Merrit sadistically says, "This is what you wanted... you begged for it, bitch!" and says it was simple rough-consensual sex in court.
- Gloats on television that he treated all his patients right, fortunately allowing other witnesses to testify against him.
- While he does have Miriam help him, he only does it for his own fantasy's and since he gives her drugs, he could be considered the reason she is so addicted to Percodan.
