The Morning Star... also known as Lucifer. The star that was originally an angel, but chose to become the Devil.
~ Akio Ohtori

Akio Othori (in Japanese: 鳳 暁生, Ōtori Akio) is the main antagonist of the Revolutionary Girl Utena manga and anime.

He is the chairman of the Ohtori Academy. The brother of the Rose Bride Anthy, Akio was once the godlike Prince Dios who gave up his divine nature for human pleasures. The punishment that was meant for him, he passed on to his sister.

In the anime, he was voiced by Jurota Kosugi in Japanese and Josh Mosby in English, while being voiced by Crispin Freeman in the thirteen episode of the English dub. In the movie, he was voiced by Mitsuhiro Oikawa in Japanese and Josh Mosby in English.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • While he was once the heroic Prince Dios, and he has a genuinely tragic backstory, time has completely shattered any redeeming quality he may have once possessed previously, and his actions are never treated as justified.
  • He has kept his sister Anthy, who allowed herself to be forced to bear the pain of a hundred sword stabbings to keep him from dying from the stress of having to bear all of the world's injustice in a state of perpetual torment, presumably doing so for hundreds of years despite being able to fix it.
  • He has molested said sister every week in order to break her emotional will, and in Episode 25 is depicted to rape her when she refuses his advances.
  • Has ran Ohtori Academy for numerous years, potentially keeping the people who live there in a time vortex, and using his position of power in order to sexually prey upon the teenagers that inhabit the school. While he's delusional enough to believe his actions have done no wrong and he's genuinely charismatic, the obvious harm he wraths and his maliciousness make it clear that he's still in control of his actions.
  • Cheated with Professor Nemuro's fiance 50 years prior to the plot, resulting in the professor burning down the hall he was in and killing 100 students.
  • Has used his identity as "End Of The World" to host tournaments for years that target people at their lowest point and pass around Anthy as a doll that is forced to be subservient to the will of her master
  • It is eventually revealed that he "gave Utena the will to live" by showing her something eternal in the eternal torment of Anthy, manipulating her by appearing in his previous form with Anthy's magic and grooming her so that she would return so he could predate her when she was older.
  • Additionally, due to his motif being expensive cars and Utena's parents being killed in a car crash, some fans have theorized that he was the person to deliberately kill her parents in the first place.
  • Poisons his fiancé for her inheritance.
  • Groomed Utena by having her move in with him and showering with her gifts, gradually letting her guard down before molesting her in Episode 33.
  • Eventually revealed to have used Utena the entire time in order to reclaim the power of Dios, which he would almost certainly use for the power of reasserting godhood as a psychopathic monster, intending to turn her into a docile princess while not truly caring about her or her well-being and likely tossing her aside after he was bored with her.
  • Throws Anthy in front of Utena in the finale in a last desperate attempt to save his skin, showing he's perfectly willing to go as far as killing her if it will let him assert his power.
  • Attempts to emotionally manipulate Anthy at the last moment, claiming he "loves her" despite his actions showing otherwise.
  • After Utena sacrifices herself for Anthy's sake, he attempts to erase her from the school's history.
  • Throws a fit when Anthy leaves to find Utena, attempting to use emotional baggage to convince her to stay and screaming angrily at her.

Trivia[]

  • Akio's depictions in the manga and alternate continuity film Adolescence of Utena are significantly different from his original characterization, but still likely to qualify as Pure Evil.
  • He is the only Pure Evil villain in Revolutionary Girl Utena.
  • Despite the anime's surrealist and metaphorical nature of storytelling, Akio's personality and motivations are still laid out clearly enough to qualify him as Pure Evil.
