Oh, you won't be able to do anything of the sort, Siegfried. The only place you and your little cyclops girlfriend are going is death row for the murder of Janus Harvey. And I know when they seat you down in that chair, just before they flick the switch... you will remember this moment and weep in rage and anger. And the thought thrills me more than anything in my life.
~ Captain Renard to Dr. Siegfried.

Adel Renard is the main antagonist of Operation: Turnabout. He is the Security Captain of the Peacemakers base in Los Angeles. In his early appearances in the case, he is shown as a competent leader that always does his job to the best of his capabilities. However, beneath the surface lies a cruel and sadistic war criminal that committed acts against humanity along with corruption for the sake of thrill.

What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]

  • Made Captain Harvey supply Helios 6 Bombs with payment to an insurgent group under the pretense it was for the military.
  • Gave the Helios 6 Bombs to the insurgent group knowing full well they would backstab him with the payment. His only reason for going along with the plan was to challenge himself. He ultimately betrayed them by not giving them the detonators.
  • Before the insurgent group could rat him out, he had them all executed by notifying the firing squad.
  • Psychologically tortures Captain Harvey by telling him who he actually gave the bombs to. He was able to manipulate him into blowing up his own subordinates in attempt to leave no witnesses behind. Captain Renard's only reason for doing this was to see how much damage he could cause if he manipulated a corrupt individual.
  • He took charge of the investigation to throw suspicion off himself and to control Captain Harvey.
  • Constantly blackmails Captain Harvey in exchange for hiding the truth of the true culprit the Helios 6 Incident. He probably didn't even care about the money, he just wanted to see Captain Harvey suffer for his own pleasure.
  • Neglects to do anything about the abuse Captain Harvey commits on his subordinates. Granted, he is not obligated to look into the affairs of the main chain of command, but he likely enjoyed seeing the abuse due to his sadistic nature.
  • Murders Captain Harvey when he would no longer have a hold of him due to the Peace Corps intending to grant Captain Harvey legal immunity for the Helios 6 Incident.
  • He made a forged suicide note signed by Janus Harvey where he remorselessly admitted to the Helios-6 bombings in order hide his blame.
  • His affability towards Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey is merely a facade. He's intelligent enough to hide his true self. In fact, it's because of this that he was thrown off suspicion after several suspects were thought of. He was only brought to the stand merely by pure bluffing and process of elimination. He slowly shows his true colors once Phoenix Wright was leading towards his motive for the murder.
  • Pins the blame of the murder on Mike November when the situation presented himself, knowing full well he's the brother for one of the victims of the Helios 6 Incident.
  • Although he attempted to demote Sergeant Tenant for neglecting his duty, he didn't do it out of protecting the base. He's either merely prideful in his own capabilities as a Security Captain or using it as an excuse to use his power to deter a man from his dream goal.
  • Only watched the trial because he realized that Dr. Siegfried and Lt. Victoria also tried to murder Captain Harvey. He wanted to see if he can get any enjoyment out of the ordeal.
  • Found it humorous when Lt. Victoria "confessed" to being the culprit of the Helios 6 Incident. A crime in which he masterminded.
  • Cooperated in giving his testimony only because he hated the idea of pathetically losing should he underestimate the fact that Phoenix Wright actually had something incriminating to say.
  • He constantly berated Phoenix Wright during his testimony.
  • Tried to get Phoenix Wright arrested for presenting a "classified document" related to the Helios-6 incident when it would reveal his motive for murdering Captain Harvey.
  • Admits to being the mastermind of the Helios 6 Incident in front of everyone in the courtroom with a smile on his face. He did this knowing full well the court can't arrest him because they have no jurisdiction over what happened in Aresia. He intended to hide from the face of the Earth after leaving so the Allied Nations can't find him.
  • Makes fun of the victims of the Helios 6 Incident and asserts his dominance by claiming that people who are emotionally weak deserves to be used.
  • Taunts the Judge, Franziska von Karma, and Phoenix Wright for failing to bring him to justice.
  • Encourages everyone in the courtroom to try to illegally bring him to justice just so they can prove that laws should be broken for justice to work.
  • Thrills at the thought of Dr. Siegfried and Lt. Victoria being executed and being tortured at the thought of himself escaping justice during their final moments.
  • When all legal measures to escape justice were exhausted, he resorted to threatening everyone in the courtroom by using a bomb dud.
  • Sees his heinous acts as a game on how long he can go without getting arrested.
  • It's suggested during an investigation into his actions by the Allied Nations that he may have committed other acts of corruption.

Trivia[]

  • He is one of the few Ace Attorney antagonists in any Ace Attorney media who made a move to resist arrest even after their guilt was conclusively proven. This makes his attempt to escape justice much worse than other antagonists.
  • He and Janus Harvey are the only Ace Attorney Pure Evils to debut from the same case. He is also currently the only Ace Attorney Pure Evil villain to kill another Pure Evil villain by direct means.
