“ | What we need right now is a clear message to the people of this country. This message must be read in every newspaper, heard on every radio, seen on every television. This message must resound throughout the entire InterLink! I want this country to realize that we stand on the edge of oblivion. I want every man, woman and child to understand how close we are to chaos. I WANT EVERYONE TO REMEMBER WHY THEY NEED US!!! | „ |
~ Adam Sutler to his high council and his most famous quote. |
“ | My fellow Englishmen: tonight, our country, that which we stand for, and all we hold dear, faces a grave and terrible threat. This violent and unparalleled assault on our security will not go undefended... or unpunished. Our enemy is an insidious one, seeking to divide us and destroy the very foundation of our great nation. Tonight, we must remain steadfast. We must remain determined. But most of all, we must remain united. Those caught tonight in violation of curfew will be considered in league with our enemy and prosecuted as a terrorist without leniency or exception. Tonight, I give you my most solemn vow: that justice will be swift, it will be righteous, and it will be without mercy. | „ |
~ Adam Sutler to his nation. |
“ | Tonight, I will speak directly to these people and make the situation perfectly clear to them. The security of this nation depends on complete and total compliance. Tonight, any protester, any instigator or agitator, will be made example of! | „ |

Adam Sutler is the main antagonist of the 2006 dystopian political action film V for Vendetta, based on the 1988 graphic novel of the same name.
He is the leader of the fascist Norsefire government, ruling a dystopian England with an iron fist. Unknown to England's population, Sutler rose to power through shady means, financing with Norsefire a bio-weapon developed by Lewis Prothero that killed 80,000 people, allowing Sutler to appoint himself as England's High Chancellor.
He was portrayed by the late John Hurt, who also played the Horned King in The Black Cauldron, Harry in Pride and Lord Cotys in Hercules.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
- He financed Lewis Prothero's pharmaceutical company to develop the Saint Mary virus, which caused an epidemic all over England and killed over 80,000 people, later denouncing the epidemic as a terrorist attack and using it to appoint himself High Chancellor of England, turning England into a fascist state.
- He established the Larkhill Resettlement Camp, a concentration camp for English citizens who didn't fit the Norsefire Party's Aryan ideal, like Jews, Heretics, Blacks, Hispanics, Lesbians, Gays, people with disabilities, Imperfect Whites, and Muslims, branded as "enemies of the state." They were all sent there to be tortured, mutilated, and/or killed.
- What's worse is that Sutler assigned Prothero and Anthony Lilliman, an ordinary cleric, to work at the camp as the commander and cleric, respectively, but neither did any good, with Prothero abusing, torturing, and executing the inmates and Lilliman not batting an eye at any of the abuse happening there.
- He put Queen Zara Tindall, the last remaining heir to the Royal Family, as her political puppet, giving him and the Norsefire Party complete control over the country.
- He rewarded Prothero and Lilliman after the epidemic ended, giving Prothero his own television show and assigning Lilliman as the Bishop of Westminter. However, Prothero used his show to spread Norsefire's bigoted propaganda, and Lilliman employed a sex agency to send him girls to molest.
- While one can argue that Sutler may have rewarded them out of gratitude for aiding him in his plot to take over England, it's likely that he did it out of pragmatic reasons, as he doesn't seem to particularly care when Prothero and Lilliman are killed years later, only concerned about what his country's people may do if they realize the truth.
- He is a conservative, devout Christian but has no problem actively oppressing minorities despite Christianity stating that all people are equal in God's eyes, proving that he doesn't really put the Christian teachings into practice and only using God as a way to keep his power.
- He spends his administration comfy at his house while letting his high council, led by his right-hand Peter Creedy, rule England on his behalf, forcing people into their houses with curfews and allowing the Fingermen, Norsefire's police, to do whatever they want with lawbreakers, not caring when numerous "undesirables" are kidnapped and executed or threatened with rape by the Fingermen.
- He has TV host Gordon Deitrich brutally detained, interrogated, and executed for mocking him with a comedic sketch on his farce show and passes his death off as if he were executed for possessing a copy of the Qur'an. Despite the comedic moment, that doesn't detract from any of his actions one bit.
- He attempted to make an example out of V's supporters on November 11th by preparing to have the country's military open fire on thousands of protesters should they storm the Houses of Parliament.
- Blames Creedy for failing to capture V once he becomes a serious threat to the government, leading a fed-up Creedy to betray Sutler and bring him to V, later killing him to secure the power for himself.
- While he is shown to be terrified and crying on his knees before he dies, it only serves to make him look pathetic and cowardly rather than sympathetic, especially when he was regularly shown to be a loud, boastful, and hateful dictator who administered harsh punishments on his subjects for the slightest reasons. That was also the reason why he deserved to be betrayed by Peter Creedy.
Trivia[]
- Only Adam Sutler qualifies for Pure Evil status, since Adam Susan, his version from the original graphic novel, is a genuine, well-intentioned extremist who sincerely believes that fascism is better for England, is insecure, and seems to feel a genuine attachment to his FATE supercomputer, which wasn't included in the film.
- Adam Sutler is similar to fascist dictators in the world.
