Adam Smasher, reputed as the Night City Boogeyman, is the secondary antagonist of the Cyberpunk franchise.
He is a major antagonist in the 1990 role-playing game Cyberpunk 2020, the secondary antagonist and final boss of the 2020 action-adventure RPG video game Cyberpunk 2077, and a major antagonist in its 2022 anime prequel series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
Adam Smasher is an infamous cybernetic solo mercenary who was heavily modified into a cyborg by the Arasaka Corporation following an accident that heavily damaged his body. Now an inhumane killing machine, Smasher serves as Arasaka's personal hitman and bodyguard, eliminating anyone who poses a threat to the megacorporation while seeking to cause as many casualties and destruction as possible. He would eventually be promoted as the bodyguard of Yorinobu Arasaka, becoming the Head of Security during Yorinobu's takeover of the corporation.
He is also the arch-nemesis of Morgan Blackhand and Johnny Silverhand, as well as the second arch-nemesis of David Martinez and V.
He is voiced in English by Alec Newman (who also voiced Oybek Nabazov in HITMAN), and by Yukihiro Misono in the Japanese dub for Cyberpunk Edgerunners.
What Makes Him Pure Evil?[]
In General[]
- Adam Smasher is highly notorious in Night City for his infamous reputation of engaging in mass murder sprees, countless acts of destruction, and his sheer brutality in accomplishing any of his contracts. Because of his nature and actions, he became infamously known as the Night City Boogeyman.
- He possesses a twisted Social Darwinist worldview of mechanical supremacy over "meat", as well as survival favoring the strong over the weak. Smasher goes as far as to possess disgust for concepts such as mercy and compassion as human traits, showcasing his misanthropic views on humanity.
- What makes this even worse is that whenever he is called out for the people he has murdered, he has no memory of the victims he has brutally murdered, not even towards the people that he supposedly respected. To him, they were nothing more but meat to be slaughtered in his eyes.
- Additionally, his empathy stat is simply listed as "Yeah, right" in the Cyberpunk 2020 statbook, showcasing his complete lack of care and empathy towards others.
- Despite the high heinous standards in the franchise, Smasher stands out for having an atrociously high kill count, followed by his sheer brutality and sadism underlining his destructive acts. Additionally, Smasher possesses personal villainy towards the majority of characters he has either killed or engaged in personal conflict with.
- He is heavily misogynistic given his vulgar insults towards female characters, as well as his acts of sexual violence and serial rape.
- Despite serving under the Arasaka Corporation and appearing to have some loyalty towards them (even willing to stay by Yorinobu's side), this is mostly likely due to the corporation permitting his atrocities and granting him leeway to do so via their contracts.
Background[]
- As a young boy, he served as a gang leader during the Collapse.
- He served under the Marines merely to acquire access to military-grade weaponry as well as further enhance his ability to kill others.
- After being discharged from the Marines for insubordination, Adam became a solo mercenary who tended to take merciless and destructive gigs, mainly around New York City. This would earn him a dreaded reputation as a result.
- It is heavily implied that he tends to brutally rape and violate women during his "one-night stands."
- After gaining a cybernetic body, he began taking contracts from megacorporations (mainly Arasaka), with requirements stipulating civilian casualties and mass destruction.
- He would defend the New York branch of Arasaka, killing off dozens of merc crews that tried to infiltrate the building while slaughtering innocent people in the city, viewing them as a "fleshy infection".
- In one of these missions, he killed a female mercenary who was part of a team in stealing Arasaka's files from the local offices. In the process, he massacred countless people in a mallplex where the female mercenary was hiding in.
- Smasher would repeatedly provoke Morgan Blackhand to a face-off due to viewing him as a threat to the full-borg's "metal-over-meat" worldview, with his rage only increasing to immense heights upon Blackhand repeatedly ignoring him.
Cyberpunk 2020[]
- He gleefully joined the Fourth Corpo War and fought for Arasaka's interests, primarily for the opportunity to finally kill Blackhand.
- He would personally slaughter many Militech soldiers and their families out of sadism, with one of these slaughters occurring in Connecticut.
- During the Night City Holoucast, he killed Johnny Silverhand by cutting him in half with his shotgun. He also severely injured Shaitan and left nothing of him but his head, which he then presented to Blackhand as a way of provoking him into combat.
- This also results in Arasaka recovering Johnny's body and being interrogated by Saburo himself. Silverhand is subsequently subjected to the Soulkiller program against his will, where he would now "live" as an engram.
- While Johnny still "lives" through the relic, it is more than obvious that Smasher had no intention of leaving him alive and would likely return to permanently kill him if Smasher were to ever discover Silverhand's survival.
- Although not confirmed, it's heavily implied that he managed to kill Blackhand in their final clash.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners[]
- During his mission to kill David to prevent him from rescuing the netrunner Lucy Kushinada, he accidentally kills Faraday by blasting him away out of Arasaka Tower, causing the man to fall to his demise. Despite Faraday being a traitorous fixer who backstabbed his allies, Smasher demonstrated no awareness of this nor had any moral objections to such acts.
- He brutally murders Rebecca by landing on her and crushing her entire body, killing her instantly; this would end up causing immense grief for David, Lucy, and Falco. He even goes so far as to sadistically taunt the group after killing Rebecca.
- He tries to kill Lucy and Falco, blasting off the latter's arm as a result, as he states that none leaves the slaughterhouse alive.
- He brutally tortured a semi-cyberpsychotic David by ripping off the anti-grav devices from the exoskeleton, causing it to crumble, and beating down the now-crippled cyberpunk before he finishes him off by blasting off his head.
- While Adam admits to David that he "had fun" and did try to offer him to become a construct for Arasaka, this is mostly likely because he enjoyed the fight rather than actually respecting David. Adam's lack of care for David is further displayed with the latter's instantaneous demise upon rejecting Adam's proposal, and the mercenary never displays any further emotions or care regarding David afterwards.
- Killing David also causes personal trauma for Lucy and Falco. Lucy is especially impacted by this, as despite accomplishing her dream of making it to the moon, she is forever tormented with broken grief over the loss of her boyfriend.
Cyberpunk 2077[]
- He cruelly taunts Evelyn Parker when she arrives in Yorinobu's room, stating that she looked like a "cut of f*ckable meat," for no reason other than misogynistic sadism.
- He tries to kill V and a wounded Jackie Welles during the Relic Heist.
- He brushes off Sandayu Oda's warnings that Hanako was going to harm and kidnapped during Saburo's memorial parade, even going so far to accuse him of disobeying Yorinobu as Oda persists in questioning his actions.
- He personally led a team to rescue Hanako while trying to have V and Goro Takemura killed, potentially succeeding with the latter should V not rescue him.
- If V chooses to attack Arasaka Tower (or allow Johnny to take control and do the deed himself), he will appear as the final boss to disrupt their rampage and end their life.
- If V decides to call Panam and the Aldecados to assist him in the attack, Smasher will kill Saul, crushing his head.
- If V decides to let Johnny take control and calls Rogue, when Adam appears, Rogue will sacrifice herself using a grenade to weaken Smasher, with the latter taunting V/Johnny of her fate.
- During the fight, if V chooses to spare Oda during the mission to kidnap Hanako, Smasher will show disdain for it, calling it disgusting.
