I was mostly shocked to see him as PE because he is the protagonist of Death Note and has even been depicted with heroic protagonists (including characters on the opposite moral rank such as Naruto and Tanjiro) in several YouTube videos (eg. a rap cypher about Jump protagonists). As a result, it quite shocked me when it turned out that he was actually 100% evil.
I mean, let’s be real here, Ohba has this odd talent of making the fanbase take sides on “who is good and who is evil”. For example, aside from giving Light “redeeming qualities”, he also makes the antagonists have dislikable traits such as making L and his two successors use unethical methods to capture him and make Soichiro rather stoic and responsible. In general, all of this sets Death Note apart from every other Jump manga at the time.
